Northern Nevada Math Club

We are focused on creating a community where math is cool, helping students find their joy of math, and encourage kids to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers.

We do all of this by holding fun, social, team-based math competitions. This isn't your typical classroom math. Our problems are challenging and expose students to new math ideas and concepts.

We emphasize continuous learning and send participants home with solutions that will help them learn and grow in their math and problem-solving skills.

We encourage students to solve problems in a way that makes sense to them. There is no "right" or "wrong" way. There may be quicker or more elegant ways but that doesn't make one "right" and one "wrong."

We want students to see math as it is in the real world. Real world math involves working with others. As such, each of our contests has a team round where students work together. They can bounce ideas for how to solve the problems and check each other's work. This has two benefits: 1) students learn to show their work because it benefits them to do so, and 2) students learn to listen and work with their teammates to solve problems - just as they will in the real world.

So, come math with us and see how much fun math is!

The Northern Nevada Math Club (NNVMath) members meet once a week for 2 hours. While we encourage members to attend every week, we know this isn't possible as many of our members are involved in numerous activities. As such, we ask members to come to as many practices as they are able.

After functioning as a club for several years and realizing that we in order to expand our mission, in the Summer of 2014 we filed to be a Nevada non-profit. Our IRS paperwork is being completed and filed.

We do not charge for participating in our program. We do ask that parents participate in the success of our fundraisers. We also ask them to evaluate their student's involvement and make a donation as it makes sense for their family. While we never want money to be the reason a student can't participate, it does take money to pay for competitions and travel. At a minimum, please become a Community Support by donating $25 per year.

Math Rocks Competitions

There are 3 different contest levels and each is a bit different.

Grades 3-5: Elementary contest level

Grades 6-8: Middle school contest level

Grades 9-12: High School contest level

NNVMath’s Competition Team

Do you enjoy math? We don't mean doing repetitive problems over and over, or problems that you have to do in a specific manner to receive a good grade. We mean do you enjoy being given a challenging problem that requires you to think and be creative? And do you enjoy working with others who like thinking and being creative as well?

If yes, check out NNVMath’s Competition Team.  Our Competition Team goes to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) each year to participate in ARML.  Going to ARML is a fun and rewarding experience.
