Science Cafe Las Vegas: Allyson Hindle

Wednesday, July 3, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Event Location:
McMullan's Irish Pub - 4650 W. Tropicana Ave., #110
Allyson Hindle, assistant professor in the UNLV School of Life Sciences, will speak at an upcoming Science Café Las Vegas. Her talk is titled, "Southern Exposure: Science at the Bottom of the World." Antarctica is a frozen desert and is a home to many extremely adapted species. One such species is the Weddell seal, an elite deep diver capable of pursuing prey to crushing depths nearly a kilometer below the icy surface and holding its breath for longer than an hour. The physiological challenges of low oxygen and high pressure faced during deep diving may offer insights into the treatment of human cardiovascular diseases. This talk will discuss science in Antarctica and focus on the strategies of Weddell seals that enable them to thrive as the world’s southernmost mammal.
Come join others for a lively science discussion, delicious food, and fun. Come at 6:30 p.m. to order your food and mingle. Those under 21 are welcome.
